Sean McVay and Kliff Kingsbury are close buddies — close enough that McVay pulled an epic prank on his buddy while dining with Chiefs QB and league MVP Patrick Mahomes.
McVay said during an appearance on the Adam Schefter Podcast that he pranked Kingsbury, convincing him that he was tampering with Mahomes and the Cardinals were going to lose the No. 1 overall pick.
“We have a mutual friend that I put his name in my phone as Roger Goodell,” McVay said. “I had this friend send me a text saying, ‘I can’t believe you’re at dinner with Kingsbury and Mahomes. You know better than this. This is tampering. You’re both losing picks.’
“I showed Kliff the text, and he saw a ghost. I said, ‘You better call Steve Keim right away.’ He said, ‘I thought I was going to lose the No. 1 overall pick.’
Kingsbury coached Mahomes at Texas Tech and both remain close.
McVay told Schefter that Kingsbury later responded to the prank, texting: “That’s messed up. I’m getting you back, man!”
Kingsbury will have chance at revenge during the season when the Rams and Cardinals face off twice a year in the NFC West.
