Robert Griffin III was back in the league last season with the Ravens. He was on the 53-man roster for the entire season and re-signed this offseason on a 2-year, $4.5M deal to be the official backup for Lamar Jackson.
During a recent podcast appearance on the Ravens’ website, RG3 said the Jaguars tried to trade for him twice last year.
“Jacksonville tried to trade for me at the end of the preseason and right before the trade deadline, so we knew that was an opportunity and there’d be a chance if things didn’t work out with Nick Foles,” Griffin said.
Jacksonville went on to sign Foles to a big 4-year, $88M deal.
Last season, the Jaguars extended Blake Bortles and had him starting at QB. So trading for RG3 before the start of the season was likely just to add a better backup on to the roster.
Attempting to trade for RG3 before the October 30 deadline is a different story. Bortles was officially benched in late November. Based off that, it seems like the Jaguars were prepared to bench Bortles but might not of liked the idea of using Cody Kessler as the next man up.
Nevertheless, Bortles is now a backup in LA, Foles is in Jacksonville, and RG3 will backup and mentor Lamar Jackson in Baltimore.
