Sean Payton: We Think Taysom Hill Is Going To Be An Outstanding NFL Quarterback

Taysom Hill has completed just six passes in his NFL career, but he has proved himself as a trick-play specialist who scored six touchdowns as a receiver and another as a rusher just last year.

But Saints head coach Sean Payton once again reiterated that he believes Hill has a future at quarterback in the NFL

“For those that aren’t sold, it’s probably because they haven’t seen enough of him in games and I can certainly understand that,” Payton said, via the New Orleans Advocate. “Now, that being said, we’ve seen hundreds of reps that weren’t necessarily regular season games and we’ve seen some of the things we feel he can do on a consistent basis.

“That’s often the case with any new player, new meaning that time comes where Taysom is transitioning into quarterback-only, people are excited or anxious to see, hey, how does this guy function down-in and down-out at that position?

“We think he’s going to be an outstanding NFL quarterback. He’s a very good athlete. But I think that’s a normal reaction for any fan relative to someone that is getting ready to play that position and they haven’t had the same amount of snaps to look at.”

Payton also told Aditi Kinkhabwala on CBS Sports “We Need To Talk” that he sees Hill having the inside track towards the Saints starting job once Drew Brees retires.

“When that time comes — and that’ll be probably at some point sooner than later — and Drew decides to retire, I see Taysom being a guy that has a great chance to come in there and become that quarterback,” Payton said.

That would all line up with what Jay Glazer of FOX has been saying for months now:

The Saints and Hill agreed to a two-year, $21 million deal with $16 million guaranteed earlier this offseason.

New Orleans signed James Winston to replace Teddy Bridgewater, so expect Hill to continue being a gadget player until his time comes.

He will turn 30 years old in August.
