The Lions are one of three teams currently with a head coach opening after they fired Matt Patricia on Saturday.
Owner Sheila Ford Hamp told reporters after the move that the team will undergo a “very comprehensive process” to find the team’s next coach and general manager.
One name that keeps on being brought up is 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh.
Saleh was born and raised in Michigan, grew up a Lions fan, idolized Barry Sanders, played at Northern Michigan University, and his family still lives in Michigan.
The 49ers were one of the best defenses in all of football last season and Saleh’s unit has continued to produce this season despite injuries to Nick Bosa, Dee Ford, Solomon Thomas, Richard Sherman and others.
Saleh’s defense forced four turnovers, had two sacks, six quarterback hits and six tackles for loss on Sunday in their win over the Rams.
Richard Sherman told Albert Breer of SI that Saleh should be the guy the Lions go after:
“He has to get the Detroit job,” Sherman said. “Homegrown. He’s a great leader of men. And he’s not stubborn. He doesn’t just think he has all the answers. He comes up with a great plan and evolves it with his players. We battle for that man! He’s a great human being. Makes you want to fight for him.”
Sherman also spoke to reporters after the game and praised Saleh.

Saleh was a finalist for the Browns job last season but they ultimately decided to hire Kevin Stefanski. There are already three openings this offseason and there will likely be more before seasons end. Saleh will definitely be in the mix for one of those jobs, and he has plenty of people supporting him.
