BYU’s Zach Wilson Is Getting Serious First-Round Buzz

By Ari Meirov

We all know about Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields and Trey Lance. But there’s another quarterback getting serious buzz: BYU’s Zach Wilson.

BYU is one of very few programs that have played eight games this season, and Wilson has put the Cougars in the national spotlight with his play.

In those eight games, Wilson has completed 75% of his passes for 2,512 yards and 22 touchdowns with just two interceptions. He’s also run for 158 yards and eight scores, while winning all eight games.

The school is ranked No. 8 in the latest AP Top 25.

“I’m telling you, every conversation I’ve had with people, that’s the name that keeps on coming up more than any other,” NFL Network Draft analyst Daniel Jeramiah said.

“The story of the NFL draft process thus far has been the ascension of Wilson,” Dane Brugler of The Athletic wrote. “Some around the league believe he could go higher than sixth.”

Wilson’s athleticism is flattering. He easily eludes pass rushers and has shown the ability to make many different throws from tough positions on the run. He has pinpoint accuracy, placing the ball where only his receiver can get to it.

The knock against him, however, is that his success has come against lesser talent.

There is still more to learn about Wilson, especially with some tougher competition on the schedule. But based on his performance so far, Wilson is receiving serious first-round love from various people around the NFL.

“He has put himself in the conversation with Ohio State’s Justin Fields and North Dakota State’s Trey Lance to be the next quarterback drafted after Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence,” Brugler wrote.
