The Browns were a major success on Hard Knocks in 2018. While there’s still time until they announce who’s on for 2019, there is reportedly some internal talks about a New York team.
According to Manish Mehta of the NYDN, HBO has shown interest in getting the Jets on in 2019, but the Jets want absolutely no part of it.
New Jets DC Gregg Williams starred on Hard Knocks last season with the Browns. Williams is now on the Jets staff with Joe Vitt, who is Adam Gase’s father-in-law. More importantly, Vitt testified against Williams in the BountyGate scandal. With both of them back together, it’s definitely an interesting staff combination to keep an eye on and would make Hard Knocks a fun watch. Jets safety Jamal Adams has also become a top personality in the league. Having a young QB, the 3rd overall pick and potentially adding some marquee free agents also helps.
Since the Jets have a new HC in place and appeared on the show in the past 10 years, they can simply say no to HBO.
League rules explicitly state that teams cannot be compelled to appear on Hard Knocks if they fall into one of three categories:
1) They have a first-year head coach in place.
2) They have a playoff berth in the past 2 seasons.
3) They appeared on Hard Knocks in the past 10 years.
