According to Benjamin Allbright, one of the reason Kansas City agreed to the Redskins trade offer for Alex Smith was due to the fact Washington gave him a long term contract extension.
Allbright adds that Cleveland offered multiple draft picks but would only commit to a short term deal with Smith.
It sounds like the Browns offered more than Washington, but Smith picked Washington, and the Chiefs acquiesced to his choice.
He also mentions that division rival Broncos offered CB Aqib Talib and a 2nd round pick for Alex Smith.
Eventually, Washington traded a third-round pick and CB Kendall Fuller for Smith, and signed him to a massive four-year contract extension which includes $71M guaranteed.
On @Browns_Daily right now @AllbrightNFL said that “Alex Smith chose Washington due to the long term deal that the Skins were offering.” Added Browns offered multiple picks but wanted him for short term deal and Denver offered a 2nd and Aqib Talib!
