Bucs Benched O.J. Howard After Brutal Drop

Bucs tight end O.J. Howard is not having a good season and it hit rock bottom on Sunday.

The Bucs had second-and-10 at their own 16 with 8 seconds remaining in the first quarter when Jameis Winston threw the ball to Howard. Howard initially had the ball, but he bobbled it and the ball somehow ended up behind his back. When he reached back to try get the ball, Saints safety Marcus Williams hit him and Demario Davis picked the ball off.

Howard was benched after that and he finished the game with no catches. He played in a season-low 17 snaps, per Greg Auman of The Athletic.

Asked about the play after the game, Howard had this to say:

“I had it and I tried to cut up-field and then next thing I know the ball gets loose and I start bobbling it and it gets behind me some kind of way, which is crazy,” Howard said. “It all happened too fast.”

Howard, a former first-round pick out of Alabama, was in trade rumors before the deadline, but the Bucs didn’t make a deal.

He has just 17 receptions for 223 yards and one touchdown this season.
