Joe Namath: “It Will Be Hard to Pass on Lawrence”

Jets quarterback Sam Darnold has not practiced or played the last couple of weeks because of a right shoulder injury. The papers in New York are already talking about the team taking a quarterback in the 2021 NFL Draft, and now a Jets legend is chiming in on the conversation as well.

Joe Namath says if the Jets land the No. 1 pick, it might be impossible to pass on Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence.

“I don’t know what they’re going to do. Do they get other draft choices? Do they still believe in Sam? I don’t look at the videos of the games, replays the way the coaches do. They’ll have to make that decision.”

“It will be hard to pass on Lawrence, I tell you. He’s a marvelous player, he has been the past few years. Everything about him…his passing ability, his movement, his habit of winning. He’s a monster. Whoever is going to have a chance to get him, will probably take him,” Namath said on The Jake Asman Show.

Namath made it clear that he wasn’t advocating for the Jets to move on from Darnold. In fact, Namath has had high praise for Darnold in the past.

“I like what I saw of him physically at Southern Cal,” Namath said at training camp in 2019. “When he got here, I liked what the coaches and players had to say about him. When I met him, I liked his demeanor. He gives you a good vibe, a good feeling. He’s respectfully humble. Physically, he can play as well as anybody, just needs to keep polishing himself and the team needs to polish up.”

The Jets are the only winless team remaining in the NFL. Lawrence has 1,544 passing yards and 15 touchdowns with an interception in five games this year for Clemson. At halftime against Georgia Tech last week, Lawrence completed 22 of 27 passes for 391 yards and five touchdowns.

The Jets are scheduled to face the Bills this week at MetLife Stadium and then they travel to Kansas City to take on Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. According to ESPN’s FPI, the Jets have the toughest remaining schedule in the NFL.
