According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Seahawks are not expected to use their franchise tag on safety Earl Thomas, allowing him to leave Seattle and sign elsewhere in March.
The franchise tag number number for safeties next season projects to be about $11.85M — above the $11.28M franchise safety tag number for this season, according to the report.
Thomas will first need to recover from the fractured leg he suffered in Week 4 vs the Cardinals. Thomas will undergo surgery that is expected to sideline him 3-4 months, meaning he should be ready to undergo physicals for any interested teams during free agency. While getting carted off, Thomas gave the middle finger to his sideline and received a $13,369 by the NFL for the gesture.
Before the season ending injury, the Seahawks had trade talks involving Thomas with the Chiefs and Cowboys.
Barring something unforeseen, Thomas will get his new contract in March and will be wearing a different uniform.
